Postdoctoral Fellow in Neurodegenerative Disease. The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral scholar position in the Department of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. We are a disease-oriented research lab focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate neurodegeneration and neuroprotection in HIV, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s diseases. The laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach that includes clinical tissues/samples, tissue culture, molecular reconfiguration, transgenic, knock-out, knock-in mice, biochemical, biophysical, in vitro and in vivo approaches to identify and manipulate signal transduction pathways associated with neurodegenerative processes. The position currently available is to study the biogenesis, composition, structure and function of exosomes and extracellular vesicles in the central nervous system using tissue culture, and small animal model systems of disease. Exosomes and extracellular vesicles are nanoparticles containing protein, lipid and miRNA cargo. Very little is currently known about these particles in the central nervous system, and interest is rapidly expanding to understand their biology, how these systems are perturbed by disease and if they can be manipulated in a therapeutic manner. We are particularly interested in understanding roles for exosomes in regulating protein trafficking/function, endosomal/lysosomal activity, energy metabolism, plasticity, survival, and immune function. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with not more than 2-years postdoctoral training and strong background in neuroscience and signal transduction. A background in miRNA is preferred.
