This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a highly motivated molecular biologist/virologist postdoctoral appointee in our Sandia/California’s Systems Biology Department to join a multidisciplinary team using molecular genetics, computational biology and biochemical analysis to develop systems for the genetic manipulation of microalgae for increased productivity and the production of fuel, commodity chemicals and high value products. In this position you will be expected to: + Develop engineered phycoviruses as vector systems for the manipulation of algal genomes and utilization of algae as a synthetic biology chassis; + Plan, execute, and analyze data from, laboratory experiments; + Form highly productive teams with diverse staff and postdocs to accomplish project goals; + Be responsible for the effective communication of research results through publications and conference presentations; + Define your future career goals and seek to acquire technical skills, scientific knowledge, and collaborations needed to pursue them
+ PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Virology, Phycology, Plant Science, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline; + Hands on expertise with the genetic manipulation of viral systems and the engineering of viral vectors for the transfection of host species; + Experience with the manipulation of large nucleic acid constructs such a bacterial artificial chromosomes; + Ability to work with poorly characterized, recalcitrant or non-model species; + Proven record of high technical achievement (e.g. as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals) and the proven ability to conduct creative, independent research.
+ Proven ability to perform as a strong individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team, and within the framework of a research project which shows evidence of meeting deadlines; + Experience with genetic engineering of plant or algal species; + Experience with Next Generation Sequencing; + Experience with crafting High-Throughput Screening methods; + Strong written and oral communication skills; + Knowledge of phycology, microalgal cultivation.
The Systems Biology Department performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare, and alternative energy. The department is composed of a multidisciplinary team of staff, postdocs, technologists, and students with expertise in microbiology, virology, molecular biology, computational biology, and analytical chemistry. The basic research activities in the department are focused on the identification and characterization of clinical and environmental pathogens, developing a systems-level understanding of host-pathogen interactions using omics and CRISPR-based tools. and study of bacterial mobile elements and microbiomes relevant to human health and the environment. Applied research activities are focused on enzyme and microbial engineering for biofuels development, development of engineered proteins, bacteriophages and stem cells as anti-microbial therapies, delivery of CRISPR-based medical countermeasures, biological agent detection, and medical diagnostics.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
