This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to support grid energy storage research and development focusing on the reliability, performance and safety of energy storage systems appropriate to grid energy storage applications. Current topics of interest include lithium ion, advanced lead acid, flow battery as well as novel storage technologies, analysis of commercial storage devices and R&D prototypes. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Effectively contribute towards presentation and publication activities supporting research efforts, and have interpersonal skills that facilitate effective team research efforts with interdisciplinary staff; + Support research activities associated with advancing the understanding around reliability and safety of energy storage systems work funded through the Department of Energy Office of Electricity, as well as through other research programs; + Utilize skills and critical thinking needed to conduct this work such as familiarity with moderately hazardous test operations, data acquisition and instrument control, project planning, test management, and familiarity with environmental, health, safety, and security work planning and controls; + Will need to become familiar with energy storage technologies and materials or have an aptitude to develop a background in this area; + Use expertise in materials characterization, and electrochemistry; + Planning, conducting and executing science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration.
+ PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a closely related field; + Strong academic record and relevant dissertation project with associated publications exhibiting relevant experience and effective teaming skills.
+ Familiarity with data acquisition and control of instrumentation for monitoring electrical, thermal, and mechanical variables; + Familiarity with battery materials and energy storage systems and theoretical and practical understanding of electrochemistry as it relates to batteries: + Experience coordinating the efforts of a group of technicians and/or students; + Experience with energy storage technologies, especially batteries and/or capacitors; + Prior experience with battery safety and/or reliability testing and familiarity with associated research challenges, testing protocol, standards, and safe work practices; + Background in analytical techniques and materials characterization; + Background in energy storage materials; + Software control of test systems through LabView or object oriented programming language, Python programming, or related control and programming expertise; + Ability to work in a team environment and support efforts to meet testing schedules; + Excellent communication skills including reporting of technical results in both written and presentation form as demonstrated through an established publication record, presentations, and/or internally produced reports; + Training and commitment to laboratory safety and experience in dealing with electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical hazards; + Laboratory focus and willingness to spend the majority of the workday in a laboratory environment; + An understanding of the principles of electrochemical processes; + Aptitude for designing engineered fixtures, cabling, and other testing hardware; + Exemplary laboratory and/or test facility safety record and a commitment to the adherence of operational safety principles; + Experience in the application of engineered safety controls in mitigating or eliminating safety hazards; + Knowledge of electrochemically active metal-oxide materials; + Knowledge of lithium-ion battery materials and systems.
The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department is focused on the development of advanced energy storage technologies and systems including the development of low cost battery technologies, safety and reliability of energy storage systems, power electronics and power conversion systems, computational and analytical tools for efficient utilization of energy storage in the electricity infrastructure. In addition, the department manages several activities for the DOE OE Energy Storage program related to the deployment and demonstration of new energy storage projects, including the development of methods and tools to evaluate the performance of storage systems, and methods for the optimal utilization of energy storage assets. The department works closely with a number of departments across Sandia in materials sciences, power sources, electrical sciences, fire science, power systems, renewables and grid integration. We also have active collaborations with many stakeholders in the electricity industry including electric utilities, product developers, universities and other national laboratories to enable the development and rapid integration of energy storage technologies in the electricity infrastructure.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
