This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a dedicated engineer that is passionate about their work and who can do creative work in basic and applied research for marine hydrokinetic (MHK) systems. We have state-of-the-art equipment and facilities that will enable you to explore creative solutions. You could be called on to do any of the activities below which includes collaborating with Industry and other Labs to develop and validate. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform work to enhance a diverse research portfolio and also support execution of the program for our primary sponsor; + Actively publish and present your research at conferences and workshops and in technical journals; + Work in conjunction with the other activities in the department to assist in furthering the development of a cross-cutting research portfolio.
+ PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, or other relevant engineering discipline; + Experience working with numerical models for engineered or natural systems; + Experience in one or several of the following areas: designing or participating in experiments in teams, utilizing modeling software with hardware, data acquisition systems, instrumentation, working with applied statistics/mathematics, measurements, and data analysis.
+ Test equipment development experience; + Ability to work on numerous projects and react to quickly changing requirements; + Excellent written and oral communication skills; + Experience in modeling and control of energy systems; + Experience in large scale testing of energy or other engineered systems; + Publication record in energy systems and/or related fields, with a particular focus on wind, wave or related fields; + Experience in software that may include MATLAB, Simulink or related software; + Experience or ability to utilize ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, OPENFOAM, and/or similar codes; + Experience in high performance computing; + Experience working with hardware development with a focus on wave and/or current energy developers/technologies, or related technologies.
Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy¿s Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) design and analysis and foundation scour. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
