This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. You will have the opportunity to perform inter-disciplinary research that couples process science, materials science, sensor diagnostics, machine learning, hierarchical structures and mechanical engineering. You will also interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia on a wide variety of research opportunities and mission related projects. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Explore the process-structure-property relationships in additively manufactured metals by
- planning and performing experiments
- developing hardware and software for advanced process diagnostics
- collecting and analyzing large process datasets
- performing material characterization + Perform mechanical design to support research, experiments and projects. A current and specific focus is the design, fabrication and characterization of architectured lattice structures. + Publish in high-impact journals and present at national conferences in materials science and additive manufacturing.
+ You will have PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline + You should have experience or academic training in advanced manufacturing research and development + Your experience will include crafting and conducting experiments + History of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance
+ Experience with Additive Manufacturing and/or Thermomechanical Processing + Knowledge of Machine Learning and experience analyzing large data sets + Ability to program using Python and Matlab + Ability to use CAD/CAM such as (Solidworks, ProE, SurfCam) + Experience designing and/or characterizing lattice structures + Knowledge of physical and mechanical metallurgy concepts and theories + Experience with materials characterization and/or metrology + Excellent written and verbal communication skills
The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional (flame, plasma, twin-wire arc, HVOF) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low pressure plasma spray. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write (aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing) and metal additive (powder bed and LENS). Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance.
