This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Are you looking to do innovative and creative research? We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee position in the Combustion Chemistry Department at the Combustion Research Facility, Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, California, to perform fundamental chemical physics investigations using ultrafast laser spectroscopy. Emphasis will be on studying chemical reactions and dynamics of gas-phase molecular species using high-photon-energy pulses derived from table-top high harmonic generation and eventually from an X-ray free electron laser such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). On any given day, you may: + Construct a table-top apparatus for ultrafast soft X-ray spectroscopy, carrying out experimental measurements of unimolecular dynamics in gas-phase systems + Analyze and interpret the results to improve understanding of non-adiabatic processes that underlie the photophysics of gas-phase molecules + Develop an apparatus for potential LCLS use, and communicating the results in publications and presentations.
You have the following: + Ph.D. in Chemistry or Physics + Expertise in one or more of the following: ultrafast lasers, table-top high harmonic generation for extreme ultraviolet/soft X-ray production, core-level spectroscopy
You also have one, or more, of the following: + Knowledge of gas phase non-adiabatic chemical dynamics + Familiarity with quantum chemistry + Experience working at large user facility light sources + Ability to code LabVIEW, MATLAB or similar analytical and data acquisition software
The Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the key chemical processes that underlie the complex mechanisms of combustion. Additional programs investigate the effects of combustion emissions on atmospheric composition and climate. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, theoretical and experimental chemical kinetics, flame chemistry and modeling, and gas-phase and particulate diagnostics development and deployment.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a DOE security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance must be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
