The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Appointee. The successful candidate will engage in programs involving expertise in materials science, chemical engineering, and advanced manufacturing. The candidate will work to develop high-aspect ratio nanomaterials and non-woven structures for energy-storage related applications. The candidate will work to develop new recipes and synthesis methodologies for nanomaterials fabrication. He/she will also conduct materials characterization to achieve in-depth understanding of material structure-property relationship, in order to optimize nanomaterials fabrication conditions and microstructure engineering.
In this role you will:
Conduct research aligned with Argonne’s strategic missions.
With mentoring, design and carry out experiments, promote findings through publications, presentations, program reports and other means of reporting outcomes.
Contribute to discovery and technological advances.
Strengthen career path opportunities by expanding technological skills, developing independent research capabilities and building professional skills such as communication, networking and leadership.
Perform metrology design and customization to demonstrate scale-up of the existing and newly-developed materials fabrication methodology.
Investigate new concepts and applications in support of program development.
Communicate results and implications of work to collaborators and scientific community.
We expect you to have:
A Ph.D. in chemical engineering, materials science, applied physics, or a closely related field.
A strong background in nanomaterial synthesis via chemical route and nanomaterials microstructure/structure analysis, such as SEM, TEM, XRD, and Raman, is desired.
Knowledge of battery or fuel cell materials.
Skills in using computer software for experiment design and data treatment, such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, and SolidWorks.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Self-motivated independent worker as well as good team player.
Experience with synchrotron-based x-ray analysis such as small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and x-ray micro-tomography (µCT) is a plus.
