This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a dedicated engineer that is passionate about their work and who can do creative research as a Postdoc in the Electric Power Research Department. You will join our dynamic team to use state of the art equipment and facilities that will enable you to explore creative solutions to projects. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop new optimization techniques for microgrid design; + Develop new optimization techniques for improving grid resilience, both at the transmission and distribution level; + Develop new optimization techniques for sizing, placement, and valuation of energy storage; + Develop new models for accurately capturing interdependencies between the electric grid and other critical infrastructure; + Create new protection schemes for grid tied and networked microgrids; + Develop new control schemes to improve grid stability with high penetrations of renewables; + Develop new control schemes for microgrids; + Develop new analysis and control techniques for low inertia grids; + Identify new PMU-enabled applications.
+ PhD in Electrical Egineering or relevant field with an emphasis on power systems; + Undergraduate degree in Math, Science, or Engineering. + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
+ Optimization coursework and experience applied to power systems; + Transmission level modeling experience (e.g., PSLF, PSS/E, PowerWorld, etc.); + Distribution level modeling experience (e.g., OpenDSS, GridLab-D, etc.); + Control theory coursework and experience applied to power systems; + Strong programming and analysis skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R, etc.); + Excellent oral and written communication skills; + Strong publication record and a demonstrated ability to perform research; + Power system coursework and experience; + Experience modeling grid + other critical infrastructure (e.g., gas, water, communications, etc.); + Coursework or experience related to modeling grid resilience; + Coursework or experience related to power system economics.
The Electric Power Systems Research Department conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid. This work includes the development of improved planning and operations methodologies from the bulk system down to end users. Our capabilities encompass the development and application of advanced algorithmic and computational methods, grid operations, economics, and policy. Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.
