Leidos is currently looking for a Post-Doctoral Sleep Research Scientist to support research projects with a focus on sleep and circadian rhythms and the effects of fatigue on human performance in the Warfighter Performance Department at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA. The Warfighter Performance Department conducts human performance, physiology and psychology investigative studies that involve planning, coordinating, designing, and executing experimental protocols that meet with the overall mission of the research objectives. This work effort includes defining patterns of resiliency to physical and psychological injury; mitigating the impact of insufficient sleep and fatigue; enhancing training strategies; evaluation and development of health and wellness strategies; evaluation of wounded warrior care; and establish return-to-duty criteria for wounded service members.
Identify Navy-relevant research topics in the areas of mitigating the impact of insufficient sleep and fatigue, and optimizing performance with a focus on sleep and circadian rhythms, generating hypotheses and developing strategic, cost-effective experimental models to support or refute these hypotheses.
Write research pre-proposals, robust and validated research protocols, formal technical reports, and journal publications based on current leading-edge sleep and circadian methodology.
Develop documentation and coordinate approval of related Institutional Review Board documents, and manage resources necessary to meet project goals. Prepare periodic internal reports and status updates.
Work with military and Government project managers to develop budgets against operational and research projects.
Manage local and outlying US Department of Defense collaborative relationships necessary for completion of project-specific milestones.
Develop and evaluate appropriate methodologies, write standards of procedure to perform appropriate methodologies, and perform quality assurance checks to ensure that appropriate methodologies are followed consistently.
Perform investigations, job analyses, and/or experiments. Independently alter field data collection tactics as operational military needs dictate.
Obtain raw data and assemble analytic data sets, and gather test/survey/experiment results. Identify and perform appropriate statistical analyses such as multiple regression, analysis of variance/covariance, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.
Seek funding sources, write funding proposals, and develop project budgets.
Prepare summaries and publications for non-research technical and general audiences.
Maintain collaborative relationships with NHRC, department, and project personnel to optimize resources and knowledge/skills
Effectively communicate results of projects to military and academic communities through presentations, peer-reviewed journal publications, technical reports, and letters to military officials.
Work is to be primarily performed on a government installation.
Some offsite travel (~10%) may be required for data collection efforts, presentations, etc.
Candidates must have completed a Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree from an accredited US university, or international university of equivalent standard, in physiology, psychology, neuroscience, exercise science, or a related field.
Candidates must have at least three years of experience working on human sleep and/or circadian-related research protocols, and demonstrate advanced sleep and circadian science, associated methodology, and sleep protocol design.
Candidates must demonstrate advanced knowledge of conventional statistical techniques such as multiple regression, analysis of variance/covariance, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.
Candidates must demonstrate knowledge and experience in processing sleep and circadian rhythms research data.
Candidates must be a self-starter, act on objectives in an independent manner, demonstrate leadership, work independently in a team, and have the ability to plan and prioritize work.
Candidates must demonstrate advanced knowledge of human subjects research using controlled laboratory-based or field-based settings.
Candidates must demonstrate excellent critical thinking with problem-solving skills and an ability to work cooperatively in a team setting. Flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities.
Candidate must demonstrate strong computer skills and experience with software such as MS Access, Excel, Word, and other programs for the PC; able to operate and troubleshoot, as necessary, laboratory machinery that is computer controlled.
Candidate must be willing and able to work non-regular hours such as overnight and on weekends as needed for data collection.
Demonstrate the ability to extend and apply the knowledge of research to the missions of the NHRC Command and the Navy.
The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level.
Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.
Previous experience designing and implementing experiments with high technical sophistication in military or veteran populations.
Demonstrated evidence of scientific achievement in the human performance domain is preferred, as shown by the publication of articles and reports, membership in scientific societies, knowledge of and experience in writing and editing technical and scientific research information, as well as the ability to speak well and concisely, and confer with professional colleagues on a peer basis.
Knowledge of research examining human performance in a military environment is preferred.
