Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. : The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department has a Postdoctoral position open for a dedicated and hardworking researcher interested in modeling batteries and battery systems. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary group and interact with researchers at Sandia and Universities working on battery development, modeling, and characterization. The Postdoc will develop and implement models for Li and non-Lithium battery systems – Like Zn-based chemistries. The models will be used to interpret lab results and engineer battery materials that can be built using additive manufacturing techniques. We fully expect that the successful candidate will not have the entire range of desired experience and will help them grow and acquire new expertise while working at Sandia. Some travel will be required. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop first-principle and reduced-order models and use machine learning and AI techniques when appropriate to model the deviation between cell and battery performances and model predictions + Use your experience in modeling, data science, and computational modeling + Generate deliverables, including software releases and publications (e.g., technical reports, conference publications, and journal publications)
+ PhD in Material Science, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering or scientific field, focusing on modeling, computational modeling, or data analysis + Experience with batteries and battery models + Understanding of machine learning and computational optimization methods + Understanding of energy storage technologies and grid-scale storage applications + Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Python, C, and MATLAB
+ Experience with using and modifying open-source software and modeling and optimization packages like Julia + Experience with parallel and GPU programming + Experience with battery additive manufacturing + Self-motivated and able to work autonomously with minimal supervision and ability to work in a collaborative and diverse group environment + Excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced through strong publication record demonstrated through journal and conference publications and technical reports + Experience in developing technical proposal preparations for new research topics
The Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department manages several activities for the DOE Energy Storage Program with a focus on the development of advanced energy storage technologies and systems. This encompasses development of low-cost battery technologies, improving the safety and reliability of energy storage systems, development of lower cost power electronics and power conversion systems, and development of computational and analytical tools for efficient utilization of energy storage in the electricity infrastructure. The department also manages several activities for the DOE related to the deployment and demonstration of new energy storage projects, including developing methods and tools to evaluate storage systems and algorithms' performance for the optimal operation of energy storage assets. The department works closely with several other Sandia groups in Materials Science, Power Sources, Power Systems, Renewable and Grid Systems, and Advanced Modeling. We have active partnerships and collaborations with other national laboratories and a number of universities. We also work closely with electric power utilities and other industry partners on a range of projects, including demonstration of new energy storage technologies in the grid infrastructure.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
