Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. The Electronic, Optical and Nano Materials department has a Postdoctoral Appointee position open for a dedicated and hardworking researcher interested in performing leading-edge experiments in various electrochemical and electrocatalytic areas, such as the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction! The Postdoc will develop and test new platforms for conventional CO2 reduction electrocatalysts in variable environments and conditions. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary group and interact with researchers at Sandia and Universities working on various electrochemical projects including electrocatalysts and electrodeposition. You will: + Fabricate, study, and optimize CO2 reduction catalysts + Fabricate CO2 separation membranes + Investigate relevant structure/chemistry/property relationships of the membranes and catalysts + Engage in other materials-related projects that will likely arise over time in areas such as novel bio/chemical sensors, chemical separations, and electrochemical energy storage. We fully expect that the successful candidate will not have the entire range of desired experience and will help them grow and acquire new expertise while working at Sandia. Some travel will be required. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Perform original laboratory studies to develop and test new platforms for CO2 reduction electrocatalysts. + Fundamentally understand advanced electrocatalytic testing as well as nanoscale concepts (transport, confinement) for reactions and chemical separations. + Engage in activities related to the fabrication and testing of these nanoscale concepts, including: + Perform vacuum deposition or electrodeposition of various materials + Perform chemical surface modifications to alter surface charge or hydrophobicity + Perform electrochemical measurements in conjunction with mass spectrometry and gas chromatography analysis of products + Demonstrate self-motivation within a collaborative team environment + Publish findings in leading journals and presenting research at scientific conferences Join our team and achieve your goals while making a difference!
+ You have, or are pursuing, a PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field and possess a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). + Experience in electrochemistry and/or electrocatalysis. + Track record of original work, e.g. conference presentations, publications in refereed journals. + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-Level Security Clearance
+ Some experience with vacuum systems + Experience in film deposition methods (e.g. RF-sputtering, evaporation) + Experience with Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectroscopy or conventional Mass Spectroscopy + Experience with Gas Chromatography systems + Strong interest in solving important national security issues and the larger context of science, society, and national security + A record of academic achievement as proven by high GPAs for relevant undergraduate degree(s) and graduate degree(s) + Effective communication and interpersonal skills that build effective scientific collaborations with a diverse population of researchers + Ability to effectively plan and manage time for diverse experimental requirements + Candidates should also have proven creative problem solving
The Electronic, Optical and Nanomaterials Department provides innovation in the design, synthesis and development of advanced, multifunctional materials to satisfy unique needs in electronic, optical, electrochemical, structural and selective-molecular-binding applications. We control chemical and structural characteristics, from the nano- to the micro-scale, in inorganic and hybrid systems to explore new material constructs and strategies aimed at optimizing and expanding material performance.
