This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. You qualify for application if you received your PhD within a five-year timeframe prior to employment. Join this diverse and passionate team of high performing individuals and achieve success while making a difference._ On any given day, you may be called on to: + Team with experts in the fields of high-fidelity multi- physics computation, large-scale nuclear core analysis and in-house experts in predictive computational simulation capabilities; + Perform work that will focus on calibration, solution verification and model validation for high-fidelity nuclear core models; + Research to support, develop & deliver V&V/UQ methods, algorithms and software, including credibility assessment processes.
+ PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline; + Ability to publish and to present state of the art technical work at technical conferences; + Expertise in one of the following:
- Uncertainty Quantification;
- Multiphase Simulations;
- VV/UQ using Surrogate Models.
+ Degree or experience in a relevant Science or Engineering discipline (e.g. nuclear, physics, applied mathematics, systems or operations research, etc); + Experience in one or more of the following:
- V&V/UQ methodology development;
- Advanced codes for engineering simulation running on massively parallel computing clusters;
- Monte Carlo and Latin Hypercube sampling for uncertainty quantification, reliability methods (FORM, SORM), sensitivity methods, and/or stochastic expansion methods;
- Code and solution verification for systems of partial differential equations;
- HPC batch runs using Dakota.
The Structural and Thermal Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) supports a number of projects within the Nuclear Energy Safety Technologies Group. The department and group focuses on analyses and experiments aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the nation's energy systems and infrastructure, with particular emphasis on civilian nuclear power. The Group's primary customer is the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Group serves as the SNL point-of-contact for the NRC. Key technical areas for our NRC-sponsored work include severe accident modeling, security analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, human reliability analysis, fire protection, and experiments. The Group also works extensively with other Sandia organizations and with the Department of Energy in a variety of areas related to risk and reliability analysis, human reliability analysis, structural analysis and modeling, fire protection, nonproliferation applications such as nuclear fuel cycle transparency monitoring, and experimental programs requiring remote locations and unique facilities. Technical staff capabilities include nuclear, mechanical and electrical engineering, mathematics and statistics, computer science, project management, and regulatory compliance.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
