If so, you may be the creative postdoctoral fellow we seek for a challenging technical opportunity to join the Power Source R&D Department. The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. You will be responsible for supporting R&D activities associated with energy storage and energy conversion technologies. We work in a team environment to tackle dynamic and exciting technical challenges related to electrical, mechanical, chemical, and electrochemical engineering disciplines. We are pursuing new battery technologies, architectures, fabrication processes, and modeling in our design and development projects that offer significant opportunities for major technical advancements. Critical to these development activities are our independent prototype test facility, the energy storage analysis laboratory, battery abuse testing laboratory, and our leadership in battery safety R&D. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Lead research activities in battery safety, characterization, and testing. + Communicate results in the form of reports to customers, conference presentations, and peer reviewed journal articles. + You will work closely with team members in all activities in a highly collaborative work environment. Some travel (<10%) required.
+ PhD in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, Physics or other relevant science, engineering, or technology discipline conferred within one to five years prior to employment. + Experience/knowledge of electrochemical methods, including the use of relevant test methods and equipment. + Experience with analytical material test methods such as X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.
+ Demonstrated proficiency in electrical engineering and electronics. + Experience with the S&E of energy conversion and storage. + Experience with testing, characterization, and destructive testing of electrochemical storage systems. + Familiarity measurement and automation software, including National Instruments or equivalent software. + Ability to lead applied research projects and interact with a broad range of customers. + Familiar with moderately hazardous operations and environmental, health, and safety work planning and controls. + Familiarity with energy storage technologies and materials or an aptitude to develop a background in this area. + Ability and desire to work in a team oriented research environment. + Strong communication (written/verbal) as proven through publication and presentations.
The Advanced Power Sources Research and Development Department develops primary and rechargeable lithium batteries, hybrid power sources, and double layer capacitors for our customers in the DOE, the military, industry, and other Sandia organizations. The Department endeavors to build on a leadership position in developing lithium batteries for energy and defense applications. In collaboration with others, we develop new power source concepts and materials leading to component development for specific applications. Our battery safety research and abuse testing laboratories are state-of-the-art and help us understand battery failures and lead our engineering efforts to produce abuse tolerant systems for nuclear weapons and other defense and consumer applications that include electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. To accomplish these missions, Department personnel perform applied research, engineering design, hardware development, cell prototyping and fabrication, safety evaluation, and testing. Our personnel also partner with industrial battery manufacturers and other government agencies to develop prototype and final battery hardware. Technology transfer through CRADAs and other industrial collaborations is actively pursued.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
