We are seeking postdoctoral appointments to conduct research and development toward advanced magnetic MEMS technologies for wireless tags, sensors, and actuators as well as power electronics. This includes, but is not limited to, MEMS devices that exploit novel magnetic and piezoelectric materials, electromechanical phenomena (e.g., magnetostriction), and next generation manufacturing techniques (e.g. 3D printing), to pursue micron-to millimeter-scale devices for tags, sensors, actuators, and power electronics. We will consider all applicants with degrees in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and physics with relevant experience in the characterization, design, modeling, and process integration of MEMS or other microsystems. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in magnetic, magnetoelectric, magnetomechanical, or power MEMS electronic devices (e.g., microinductors). On any given day, you may be called on to: + Model devices, layout designs, create fabrication process flows, characterize materials and devices. + Apply critical thinking to solving problems and generating creative technical solutions. + Work in a team environment and contribute knowledge to the team. + Interact with other scientists and engineers to solve technical problems. + Conduct research and publish.
+ A recent Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related science or engineering discipline (degree must be obtained prior to starting date). + Excellent communication (oral and written) skills. + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance.
The successful candidate for this position will have some of the following qualifications and will be given the opportunity to grow in the areas that are not current: + Experience characterizing MEMS or semiconductor devices. + Experience designing MEMS (e.g., AutoCAD, L-EDIT, etc.). + Experience modeling MEMS (e.g. COMSOL). + Experience with instrumentation control and data acquisition programming (FPGA and/or microcontroller). + Experience performing bench top electrical measurements, especially on magnetic devices. + Experience with printed circuit board (PCB) design and development. + Experience with fabrication and process integration of MEMS, especially for magnetic devices. + Intellectual curiosity to learn or understand new technical areas outside of the candidate’s existing educational repertoire. + The ability to troubleshoot and seek out novel solutions to difficult technical challenges. + Eagerness to take an assigned task and carry it to fruition with minimal supervision. + Can function in and adapt to a dynamic work environment. + Brings a diversity of background, experience, interests, etc. to the department.
You will be part of the MEMS Technology Department (http://mems.sandia.gov/). We conduct research and development for advanced micro-electromechanical systems that push the technology envelope for national security applications. Our broad R&D portfolio includes traditional MEMS sensors and actuators (e.g., inertial sensors and switches), piezoelectric devices (e.g., ultrasonic transducers), RF/acoustic devices (e.g., RF filters), opto/acoustic devices (e.g., optical modulators), magnetic and photovoltaic devices, and emerging technologies. We also develop and maintain a comprehensive set of MEMS fabrication processes in Sandia's MESA Silicon and Micro Fabs, where we build MEMS with traditional bulk and surface micromachining, piezoelectric films, damascene and electrodeposited metals, through substrate vias, wafer bonding, and other semiconductor fab processes. MEMS is an interdisciplinary field. Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance.
