On this Postdoctoral appointment you will conduct fundamental research and development of large area composite coatings of nanomaterials/polymers as well as structure and property characterizations. Research areas include: + Synthesis and functionalization of nanomaterial fillers such as nanoparticles, 1D nanorods/nanowires, carbon tubes and fibers, graphite particles, clay particles, etc. + Formation of large areas of ordered arrays of nanomaterial fillers within a polymer matrix through self-/direct-assembly + Structural characterizations (e.g., SAXS, TEM/SEM, AFM, etc.) and property characterizations such as mechanical properties (e.g., high pressure compression through diamond anvil cell, nano-indentation), electromagnetic, x-ray, and neutron particle shielding characterizations, etc.
+ Your education includes, a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline plus a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics + Your background experience includes synthesis, characterization, composite coatings of nanomaterials and polymers + You have experience in nanomaterials synthesis with an emphasis on solution routes + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance
+ You'll have experience in materials (chemical, physical, morphological) at the angstrom to bulk length scales and inorganic molecule characterization + Characterization of materials using X-ray based analytical tools (i.e., powder X-ray, single crystal structure solution, X-ray fluorescence) + Experience and capability in general mechanical characterizations, transmission measurements, surface plasmon/polariton excitation/coupling, radiation resistance measurements + Strong publication record as proven by papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals + You are a creative inventor/co-inventor on patents or patent applications
The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities. Activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal-particle "inks" and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self-assembly of nanoparticles in 2- and 3-dimensions. Processing research and development includes; providing a "Direct Write" capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospining of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments. Our customers include all of Sandia's mission areas and numerous external collaborators. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local high schools, community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States. Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
