Job DescriptionDo you want to join a diverse team that solves challenging materials science issues of national interest? Are you passionate about your work and the development and utilization of NMR spectroscopy to explore solutions? The Organic Materials Science Department is seeking a research and development materials scientist to join our diverse and creative team. Your research will be grounded in NMR spectroscopy and will be directed at developing methods to address material chemistry concerns for a wide range of national security applications including organic and polymeric materials, composites, ceramics, glasses and other energy and Nuclear Deterrence related materials. You will work directly with material scientists, engineers, and physicists to characterize these materials and to answer specific questions concerning structure, dynamics, kinetics, aging and lifetime in materials. Your responsibilities will include the operation, maintenance and future vision of the NMR facility at Sandia, the development and implementation of NMR methods for characterization, and to develop new and novel NMR methods as applied to materials chemistry.
+ You possess a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics or related discipline plus a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) + You have experimental experience in the operation and development of NMR spectroscopy as applied to materials + Your Postdoctoral experience includes 1 or more years' use of NMR spectroscopy for materials analysis + You are Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
+ The ability to work in teams and with users with a wide range of specialties. + Experience in both solid state and solution NMR as applied to chemistry or materials science and the determination of structure-property relationships. + Research experience in solid MAS NMR and multi-dimensional and multi-frequency techniques. + Experience in trouble shooting, maintaining and updating NMR instrumentation, including cryogenic fills and variable temperature experiments. + Experience with other materials characterization techniques including the analysis of thermo mechanical, spectroscopic and other methods. + Experience in NMR analysis software such as Bruker TOPSPIN, DMFIT, and DNMR. + Experience in software use and development including (e.g. MATLAB, Python, C++)
The Organic Materials Science Department researches and develops new and advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a wide range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Current areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, creating new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, creating reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30 - 40 year lifetimes.
