Job DescriptionThis postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security! We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee to advance our research in numerical methods for simulation of electromagnetic plasmas and related phenomena. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to algorithm development for electromagnetics and kinetic, fluid, and/or hybrid plasma simulation. Particular interest areas for us include time integration methods for multiscale systems, high-order spatial discretization methods, and novel methods for verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification. This research, and the accompanying software development, will go towards expanding the capabilities of our plasma simulation software, EMPIRE, to help our team meet Sandia’s broad mission needs. The algorithms developed will also be targeted towards exascale simulation and portable performance on the next generation of the Department of Energy’s advanced-technology supercomputers. Journal publications, conference presentations, and Sandia mission impact will be expected from this research.
+ PhD in computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or closely related engineering discipline + Scientific programming experience in C++ + Experience with software development for modern high-performance computing architectures, e.g., CUDA + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
+ Strong background in mathematics and algorithms for electromagnetics, plasma physics, fluid dynamics, or related disciplines + Knowledge of plasma simulation using kinetic and/or fluid methods + Expertise in numerical analysis + Demonstrated ability to work with others and contribute in a team environment + Excellent verbal and written communication skills + Willingness to develop expertise in different areas of electromagnetics and plasma physics
The Plasma Theory & Simulation department performs research and software development in support of advanced theory, modeling, simulation, and analysis to address a broad range of plasma physics applications at Sandia. We use the high-fidelity massively parallel software we develop to support Sandia’s nuclear deterrence mission and pulsed-power experimental facilities.
