Job DescriptionHJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support Dr. R. Joel Lowy in the Scientific Research Department (SRD) within the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to AFRRI. Responsibility include logistics, conducting experimentation and overall laboratory functions in support of the laboratory goals. The focus of the laboratory is the impact of ionizing radiation and microbial pathogens on the innate immune system singly and in combination. Current research is to understand the effects of radiation and viruses on cell signaling pathways, including feedback controls, resulting in macrophage inflammatory cytokine and interferon production.
Responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in support of the Principal Investigator and as appropriate collaboration with research team members. Responsibility for aiding in experimental design and logistics, conducting experimentation and overall laboratory functions to accomplish research along a focused line of inquiry which has a manuscript in development. We are looking for a researcher who is independently motivated and able to provide significant contributions and creativity. Experiments include the use of ionizing radiation and work with a variety of microorganisms and their biochemical simulants. Projects will use techniques in virology, radiation biology, microbiology, cell and molecular biology, and immunology. Applicants are expected have the desire to learn or develop new approaches as needed.
1.Assists in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development. (20%)
2.Performs specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which involves specialized procedures in cell and molecular biology, microbiology and immunological with little or no additional training to meet project goals. Organizes and procures needed reagents, performs experiments, analyzes data. As need learns or develops new approaches. (40%)
3.Collects and handles samples and keeps detailed records of experiments, current or new procedures or protocols, including complex data analysis and interpretation, and verifies and corrects data entry. (20%)
4.Assists with the preparation of data, results, and their interpretation for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals. (10%)
5.Attends relevant seminars, training sessions, scholarly activities, and meetings as appropriate. (10%)
6.May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge in Microbiology, Virology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field. Ability to be self-motivated to act with significant creativity and independence to design and conduct experiments, and execute detailed instructions to support and reach project goals. Demonstrated good skills in record keeping, organization, and data analysis, and excellent ability with written and verbal communication of project results and a record of publication consistent with their experience.
Minimum Education: Doctoral degree in cell biology, molecular biology, Virology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a closely related field. Candidates should have a record of publication expected for their level of training or related field is required.
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-5 years of relevant work experience is required.
Work Environment: Set in a laboratory work environment.
Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
