Job DescriptionPosition Summary:
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is currently searching to fill a Post Doctoral position in lidar (laser radar) development with the Space Physics research group. The successful applicant will join a team of researchers developing a new solid-state laser and a new resonance lidar system. The successful candidate will develop a new laser system and integrate it into a lidar system, and analyze and evaluate the lidar performance as part of this effort. We are particularly interested in scientists and engineers with a demonstrated record of experimental research and experience with electro-optic instrumentation. Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in developing optical remote sensing technologies. This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Research and Development: Design and construct laser systems and associated lidar systems. Develop and use instrument control and data retrieval software. Participate in field campaigns. Interact with scientists as part of a multi-institution research team. Design and develop experiments with lidars, radars, imagers, and/or satellites. Publish research results in peer-reviewed literature. Present research results at professional conferences, meetings, and workshops.
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska is a world-class research institute with a strong commitment to Atmospheric Science, Space Science, and Remote Sensing. The Geophysical Institute has laboratory facilities to support the laser development on the UAF campus and to commission the lidar system at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR) and the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP). Knowledge of and ability to design and construct data acquisition and control systems.
Proven ability to work as part of a research team.
Ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Required Education and Experience:
PhD degree (already received, or having completed all requirements or awaiting graduation at time of appointment) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Remote Sensing or relevant discipline at time of appointment.
