Job Title Postdoctoral Research Associate in Kinetic Structures Lab
The Kinetic Structures Laboratory (KSL) is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The KSL, directed by Dr. Ashley P. Thrall, is dedicated to investigating the behavior, design, and optimization of kinetic civil infrastructure utilizing numerical and experimental approaches. Kinetic bridges, shelters, and buildings include modular systems, which are rapidly movable and deployable. These structures are critical for effective humanitarian responses following disasters, successful military operations, and accelerated construction of civil infrastructure. A recent research interest has also included field monitoring of bridges. This 1,200-ft2 facility includes computational (dedicated high performance computational servers), rapid prototyping (laser cutter, 3D printer), and experimental testing (Digital Image Correlation, conventional instrumentation, hydraulic actuators) equipment.
Current and recent projects of the KSL include:
• designing rapidly deployable origami-inspired shelters;
• developing new approaches to rapidly erect bridge systems;
• performing topology optimization on modular structures;
• and investigating prefabricated high-strength rebar systems with high-performance concrete for accelerated construction of nuclear concrete structures.
Ph.D. in structural, mechanical, or architectural engineering.
Previous experience in one or more of the following fields: finite element modeling, especially with the software package ABAQUS; structural optimization; parametric modeling.
