A post-doc position is available at Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY to work on an NOAA-funded project to develop next-generation aerosol sampling inlets for aircraft. Atmospheric aerosol play a significant role in modulating Earth’s radiation budget, but there is significant uncertainty in our understanding of the magnitude of their contribution because of challenges in in-situ characterization of these particles because of difficulties in accurately sampling particles from aircraft. This project aims to overcome the existing challenges by enabling accurate aerosol sampling from high-speed aircraft.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a background in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and prior experience in simulations of turbulent and compressible flows, and aerosol dynamics. Knowledge of wind-tunnel measurements and experimental data analysis are desired. The funding for this position will last for up to three years.
Job Description Summary
• Use fundamental aerosol mechanics to guide initial design of aerosol inlets
• CFD simulations (LES, RANS) of different inlet designs.
• Wind-tunnel experiments to validate CFD simulations
• Work with a graduate student for aerosol experiments and modeling
All applicants must have an advanced degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field to be considered. A PhD is required.
Applicants with a demonstrated experience with CFD modeling and aerosol dynamics simulations will be given priority.
