Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700. : We are seeking a POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEE The Energetics Characterization organization seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to conduct research and development in the broad area of energetic materials science. Your core responsibilities will involve examining fundamental mechanisms underlying historical materials processing activities and using that information to improve or create new and novel processing approaches. These efforts will facilitate advancement of low-technology readiness level (TRL) materials and processes to higher TRLs suitable for production. Accordingly, you will apply a strong experimental skills to investigate structure-property relationships as they relate to changes induced by processing and aging in granular metal, metal hydride, and molecular crystal materials. Specific driving forces for change include, but are not limited to, heating and cooling, gas-solid interactions, mechanical deformation and fracture. Most work will be experimental in nature, however, strong skills in novel data analysis, working knowledge of computational materials simulation, and experience working with modelers are all highly desired. Previous experience with energetic materials is not required, however, you should be both willing and, with appropriate training, capable of safely working with hazardous materials. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work both independently and as a member of a team. + Conduct investigations of structural and chemical changes associated with materials processing and aging + Support existing projects and develop new efforts in energetic materials science research + Present research at national and international technical conferences + Contribute to scientific publications in both internal and peer-reviewed open literature + Work in a dynamic team environment and manage time according to work demands
+ PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related field + Experience with characterizing structure, chemistry, and/or mechanical behavior of materials + Good communication skills evidenced by a record of publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and presentations at technical conferences
+ Experience in powder (granular materials) processing and characterization + Experience in characterizing mechanical deformation across length scales from bulk (cm/mm) to small (µm/nm) length scales through ex- and in-situ experiments + Experience in thermal analysis or thermal processing of materials + Experience with electron microscopy (scanning or transmission), focused ion beam (FIB), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray microscopy/computed tomography, X-ray diffraction, or combination thereof + Experience with automated processing and analysis of 2-D and 3-D microscopy data with Matlab, Python, Mathematica, or similar software tools + Strong theoretical knowledge base in thermodynamics and kinetics + Proven track record of working with computational modelers + Ability to work effectively both independently and in an interdisciplinary team + Experience in handling energetic and other hazardous materials + Active DOE “L” or “Q” clearance
The Energetics Materials Department, Organization 07555, is an integral part of the Explosives Technologies Group at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Energetics Materials Department is located within the Explosives Components Facility and is responsible for the development, characterization, and performance evaluation of energetic materials (explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics). This includes activities related to aging, materials compatibility, production process evaluation, material research/development and anomaly characterization as they relate to the performance of energetic materials.
