Job Description
Responsibilities: Assisting with grant writing, manuscript preparation, and research projects in the area of nutrition, nutraceuticals, and dietary supplementation is the primary responsibility. This work will be conducted within the Center for Nutraceutical and Dietary Supplement Research (http://www.memphis.edu/nutraceutical) within the College of Health Sciences. Work may involve assisting with securing external funding for research projects, management of funded projects, performing laboratory experiments, oversight of students working in the Center, and other duties as appropriate and as assigned. Mentoring of graduate students may be expected.Qualifications: A minimum of an earned Doctoral degree in Nutrition, Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or a related area of study is required. Experience with a variety of lab techniques is required. Interest in designing and performing studies using human subjects in the field of nutrition, nutraceuticals, and dietary supplements is required. Interest in performing cell culture studies and those involving animal models is desired. Qualified applicants should have a publication record and the ability to effectively write scientific manuscripts. Effective oral and written communication skills in English are required. Candidate must meet eligibility requirements to begin and continue working in the United States at the time of appointment.
Setting: The Center for Nutraceutical and Dietary Supplement Research was established in 2016 with the mission of investigating botanical agents, dietary ingredients, and finished dietary supplements in terms of safety and efficacy, through cell culture experiments, animal studies, and human clinical trials. Multiple externally funded studies are conducted within the Center each year and we are seeking to expand this operation. The Center is housed within the CHS (www.memphis.edu/healthsciences), which is home to more than 50 full-time faculty and staff members and serves approximately 1800 students majoring in one of five academic disciplines. Major research equipment in CHS includes an 8-color flow cytometer, Seahorse and Oroboros metabolism analyzers, a qPCR system, an automated inverted fluorescence microscope with live cell imaging capabilities, a multimodal plate reader, and equipment supporting standard assays in biochemistry and molecular biology. Additional basic science core facilities on-campus include The Integrated Microscopy Center and the Feinstone Center for Genomic Research. A fully functional biomechanics laboratory is also available within the CHS, with two 3-D motion capture systems, instrumented treadmill, isokinetic dynamometer, and multiple other pieces of equipment used for data analysis. Off-campus opportunities for collaboration are available with investigators at the University of TN Health Science Center, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and various industry partners in healthcare and nutrition sectors. The University of Memphis is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as one of two public research universities and the only community engaged public university in Tennessee.
