Postdoctoral Appointee - Ultrafast Phenomena in 2D Quantum Materials
- Argonne National Laboratory
- Location: Argonne, IL
- Job Number: 7098583 (Ref #: 413160)
- Posting Date: Apr 26, 2022

Job Description
You are invited to apply for a postdoctoral appointee position in the Synchrotron Studies of Materials Group in the Materials Science Division. This postdoctoral position is supported by a DOE-funded research program on ultrafast science involving Argonne National Laboratory, University of Washington, and MIT. The goal of this research program is to understand and harness the nonequilibrium correlation between structural, charge, and spin/pseudospin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional (2D) materials. The success of this program will lead to new means to control the electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of 2D materials at ultrafast timescales, which holds promises for developing new energy technologies.
The successful candidate will lead the effort to study two-dimensional materials using state-of-the-art ultrafast techniques. A wide range of ultrafast techniques including ultrafast x-ray diffraction, ultrafast electron microscope, terahertz spectroscopy, and optical pump-probe measurements, will be utilized to characterize ultrafast electronic and structural processes in 2D materials. The candidate is responsible for conceiving, planning, and implementing the scientific research, and for reporting relevant results in an appropriate form.
Position Requirements
· Doctorate and 0 years work experience.
· Knowledge of condensed matter physics and 2D physics.
· Knowledge and experiences of ultrafast pump-probe techniques using optical, x-ray and\or THz radiation.
· Experiences with ultrafast x-ray or electron diffraction and microscopy.
· Good oral and written communication skills in collaboration and ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
Any additional knowledge and experience of the following techniques will be beneficial: scanning near-field optical microscopy, synchrotron hard x-ray nano diffraction, simulation, and modeling of nanoscale phenomena.
