- Bioinformatics R&D Undergrad Year-round As a Bioinformatics intern, you will support exciting research projects using bioinformatics to address important challenges in health, biodefense and bioenergy. You will work with a mentor on projects that may include techniques such as machine learning, DNA sequence analysis and measurements of gene expression. A successful candidate might be somone maoring in the biological sciences who has some existing programming knowledge and wants to learn bioinformatics, or someone who is majoring in computer or information sciences and wants to get exposure to bioinformatics. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Write software and scripts to process biological data such as high-throughput sequencing data + Learn how to apply existing software and informatic tools to synthesize, analyze and display data + Create and curate databases + Meet with team members to discuss and plan experiments and analyses + Learn new bioinformatics, programming, data analysis and biology skills + Develop independent plans and present your results + Describe your work in writing and contribute to scientific publications COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate: Sandia demonstrates its commitment to public safety in the national interest by requiring that all new hires be fully vaccinated or have an approved medical or religious accommodation before commencing employment. Qualifications We Require: You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: + Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program + Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 + Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer + U.S. citizenship or LPR, Asylee or Refugee status Qualifications We Desire: + Pursuing a science, engineering, statistics, computer/data science or math major + Ability to work 10-20 hours per week during the year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer + Laboratory or computational research experience + Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrated by experience organizing and presenting scientific results + Completion of undergraduate courses in biology, computer programming, chemistry About Our Team: The Systems Biology Department performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare, and alternative energy. The department is composed of a multidisciplinary team of staff, postdocs, technologists, and students with expertise in microbiology, virology, molecular biology, computational biology, and analytical chemistry. The basic research activities in the department are focused on the identification and characterization of clinical and environmental pathogens, developing a systems-level understanding of host-pathogen interactions, and microbiomes relevant to human health and the environment. Applied research activities are focused on enzyme and microbial engineering for biofuels development, biological detection, and medical diagnostics..

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
