Job Description
Job Summary:A postdoctoral scientist position is available in the Franzini group at the University of Utah. The position is available immediately and strong preference will be given to applicants that can start within the next five months. The work place will be located in the new Skaggs Pharmacy Research Building (Salt Lake City, Utah) with access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. The position is anticipated to last from one to three years. The salary is $53,700.
Responsibilities:
The scientist will perform research in the areas of bioorganic and medicinal chemistry. The research focus is on DNA-encoded libraries (DELs), which is an innovative drug discovery approach increasingly used in pharmaceutical industry. The scientist will primarily participate in the validation of DNA-compatible reaction schemes, synthesis of DELs, DEL affinity selection experiments, and DEL data analysis. Furthermore, the applicant will be involved in drug development projects synthesizing hit molecules, performing computer-guided drug design, and developing bioassays.
A successful candidate is expected to contribute to a positive work environment, which includes safe laboratory practices, and high scientific ethics standards. The position may include mentoring students and participating in routine lab maintenance.
Qualifications:
Ideal candidates are highly motivated to advance their career by developing ambitious research projects. A minimal requirement is a Ph.D. in Bioorganic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology or a related discipline granted within the last 0-3 years. The candidate should have an excellent training in standard chemistry-related techniques. Good knowledge of organic chemistry is a prerequisite. Expertise with techniques in bioconjugation, medicinal chemistry (e.g., computational drug discovery, chemoinformatics) and biochemistry (e.g., PCR, protein expression, bioassays, cloning, cell culture) will be valuable. It is expected that the candidate is enthusiastic about learning new methodologies and concepts.
Good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) are anticipated. A high degree of self-motivation and independence is required. The ability to work meticulously and remain focused for long periods is critical when working with DELs.
