Job Description
The newly established Q-NEXT quantum center at Argonne National Lab (ANL) is looking for candidates to fill a technical staff position to help support state-of-the-art materials synthesis center for quantum information science (QIS). A successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team working with a group of scientists from Argonne, University of Chicago, and throughout the Q-NEXT partnership (academic, industry, and national labs), using their skills for tool installation and operation, systems development, and process optimization to support a wide range of quantum information processing endeavors. Additionally, the candidate will be encouraged to pursue their own technical directions including tools and process developments to progress the scientific missions within the Q-NEXT center.
Primary Responsibilities
Support the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and optimization of lab-critical infrastructure
Help develop novel and optimize existing synthesis, fabrication, and characterization processes for QIS materials
Contribute to the ongoing efforts to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for all
Collaborate with other scientists within Q-NEXT and more broadly with scientists at Argonne, including graduate and post-doctoral students from institutions within the Q-NEXT partnership within the various research groups involved
Maintain a working knowledge of the technological tools as well as maintain developments in the field and related processes that can be used to contribute to the technological success of ongoing Q-NEXT projects
Participate in maintaining technical reports and other documents associated with the operation of lab equipment, along with reports on experimental progress, technical developments, and new initiatives
Position Requirements
Knowledge and experience of laboratory technical facilities, building infrastructure, and scientific/technical tool maintenance
Design skills with experience designing gas manifolds, vacuum systems, chilled water lines, electronics / circuits
Knowledge and experience of vacuum (UHV) systems, gas handling, exhausts / vents, and electrical
Experience working in synthesis (growth) or nano-fabrication (clean room) scientific and research laboratory environments
Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication
Experience collaborating with others and the ability to work with a team in an interdisciplinary environment
Experience with material synthesis and/or growth tools and process development is desirable
Experience with microwave electronics, small printed circuit boards, electrical engineering design, and other electronics is preferred
Ability to work normal daytime work hours at the Argonne site. Occasional travel and some overtime may be required
Ability to work independently and without constant direction in the performance of routine tasks
Minimum Education / Experience Requirements:
PT2 Level: Bachelors (or equivalent) in Physics, Applied physics, Electrical engineering, or related engineering field. At least 2+ years of experience with materials synthesis, or opto-electronic laboratory environments (or equivalent).
PT3 Level: Bachelors (or equivalent) in Physics, Applied physics, Electrical engineering, or related engineering field. At least 4+ years of experience with materials synthesis, or opto-electronic laboratory environments (or equivalent).
