Job Description
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a technically strong Postdoctoral Researcher in the area of life cycle assessment and technology assessment to quantify energy, environmental, and cost effects of building components, building technologies, and building operations. This is a full-time position within the Systems Assessment Center in the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis Division. We are currently seeking applicants with strong background and expertise of evaluating embodied and operational energy and sustainability performances of residential and commercial buildings and key building components, systems, and efficiency- and performance-enhancing building envelope technologies.
The Postdoctoral Researcher collects, synthesizes, and processes information to develop high-quality databases and extract meaningful results, work with other team members to develops and applies LCA methodologies to address critical analytical issues, provide rigorous and objective results, communicates results through well-designed figures and tables, publish journal articles and reports, and present results at conferences, workshops, and project meetings.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with staff and postdoctoral researchers in the Systems Assessment Center to analyze buildings technologies and components, and buildings operations, develop new models and datasets, and to develop rigorous and objective results. The Analyst will collect and synthesize information in the buildings sector to conduct LCA studies in the GREET modeling platform and other analyses; process large datasets to derive meaningful results; communicate results through presentations, journal articles, and reports; and present results to sponsors and stakeholders at conferences, workshops, and project meetings. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work closely with collaborators from other national labs, industry collaborators, organizations, and academia to coordinate efforts to address data needs and analytical issues. The Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to annual updates of the buildings LCA module of the GREET model through working with other researchers in the Center to incorporate new and updated building technology options.
Position Requirements
Ph.D. degree in building science, civil engineering, environmental science, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
Expertise in energy and sustainability analysis related to buildings technologies and components.
Experience in working with LCA models to address embodied carbon and energy impacts of building components and whole buildings.
Skilled written and oral communication skills at all levels of theorganization.

Preferred qualifications include:
Published peer-reviewed journal papers addressing embodied/operational energy and emissions impacts of building systems, components, and technologies.
Building energy modeling experiences with models such as Energy Plus
Passion for and experience in data-driven building energy and environmental analysis.
Desire to work as a part of a team in a highly collaborative environment.
Familiarity with a wide range of data sources relevant for building energy and environmental analysis, and the ability to identify emerging topics and data sources and engage experts to conduct research.
Well-developed problem-solving, quantitative, and critical thinking skills; intellectual curiosity. Able to structure and formulate solutions to complex problems.
Highly motivated and detail oriented with the ability to work independently and in close collaboration with team members. Energized by working as part of a highly productive team.
Skilled written and verbal communicator, including the ability to present complex information so that it is understandable to a broad audience.
Breadth of knowledge in the buildings sector and energy systems and relevant issues.
