The Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an open position of postdoctoral appointee.
The research project aims at very large size bulk perovskite crystal growth high performance nuclear radiation detector applications. The project involves a considerable amount of experimental work with a variety of synthetic techniques such as high temperature solid state reaction, flux reaction, solution reaction, and purification and crystal growth using zone refining, Bridgman techniques, etc. The work will also include a variety of physical measurements such as electrical resistivity, X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy, and related techniques.
The candidate is expected to independently conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists, and materials scientists.
Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, physics, nuclear engineering or equivalent
Primary major in synthesis, crystal growth, and with characterization of semiconductor materials (chalcogenides and/or halides) for basic physical properties
Large scale bulk crystal growth using Bridgman method is preferred
Fabrication of radiation detectors (scintillators or semiconductors)
Characterization for charge transport and radiation response (X-ray, gamma-ray), photoluminescence, Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (defect state analysis), etc.
Good written and oral communication skills
NOT considered in this position: nano-science, thin film, organic, or bio-related
