Research Fellow in Frequency-Stabilisation of Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers for Imaging Applications
- University of Leeds
- Location: Leeds, United Kingdom
- Job Number: 7106977 (Ref #: EPSEE1076)
- Posting Date: Aug 2, 2022
Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in quantum cascade lasers, terahertz science or micro-fabrication? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities?
We seek a post-doctoral research fellow to join a three-year, collaborative, EPSRC-funded project in the fields of terahertz (THz) imaging and THz quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). This exciting three-year position will give you the opportunity to work at the forefront of our rapidly growing field. You will focus on the characterisation of high performance THz QCLs with the aim of establishing a compact, frequency-stabilised QCL platform that will allow the development of a fast THz imaging system. Different approaches to the frequency stabilisation will be investigated, including frequency-locking to a gas absorption line, and by frequency mixing with a local oscillator using state-of-the-art Schottky diode mixers. Working alongside collaborators from Durham University you will develop the QCL platform to enable fast THz imaging by up-conversion using Rydberg atomic vapours. The applications for this work include fast industrial inspection of semiconductors and composite structures, and the spectral discrimination of materials.
You will join a world-leading terahertz group at the University of Leeds, with state-of-the-art growth, device fabrication, and terahertz experimental facilities, and collaborate with other members of the consortium at the Department of Physics, Durham University.
You will have a background in at least one of the fields of laser physics; optics; and terahertz technology. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, a proactive approach to problem solving, and be comfortable interacting day-to-day with academics of all career stages across several institutions.
