Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated Post-Doctoral Appointee to join our dynamic team to solve complex multi-physics problems primarily in the area of radiation hydrodynamics in extreme environments, with similarities to plasma physics and astrophysics. Tools and methods are computational. The selected candidate will use their theoretical understanding of elements of hydrodynamic, plasma, or radiative transfer physics and strong programming skills to develop creative solutions to unique national security challenges! On any given day, the selected applicant may be called on to: + Develop, verify and validate physics-based computational models to solve radiation-hydrodynamic problems + Apply models and codes to customer-specific problems + Work with a mentor one-on-one or in small teams + Document results in high-quality presentations and reports Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Minimal travel is required for this position. Qualifications We Require: + PhD acquired within the last 5 years', in physics, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field + Experience in computational modeling and simulation of hydrodynamics + Programming experience with Fortran + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Programming experience with C++, Python, or Matlab + Experience with parallel programming and computing environments such as Linux or High Performance Computing systems + Familiarity with validation, verification, and uncertainty quantification techniques + Proven ability to perform independent research, as well as to work effectively in a team in various roles (leader and group member) + Proficiency with varied communication methods, including oral presentation, preparation of high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate scientific and technical information at a level tailored the audience + Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent with the ability to obtain SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test About Our Team: We serve national defense and nonproliferation customers with theoretical and computational research of nuclear detonation effects and signatures. We develop first-principles models to underpin a deep physics-based understanding of the development of nuclear fireballs and their optical signatures in a variety of circumstances. Department expertise includes radiation transport, hydrodynamics, material behavior and interactions in extreme environments, and code development for high performance computing.

Security Clearance:
