The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee who will conduct (under the guidance of a supervisor) fundamental research in the development of electrolyte solvents and additives for lithium batteries. The research will be focused on the realization of new electrolyte system for the stable cycling of various high voltage cathodes. The candidate will plan and conduct research on materials characterization including electrochemical evaluation and structural characterization. Mechanistic study on the working and degradation process will also be carried out.
Considerable experience in organic synthesis, possess good problem-solving skills based on thorough understanding of synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms
Considerable knowledge in organic chemistry, possess high-level understanding of molecular electronic structure properties and structure-function relationships
Considerable skill in the purification and characterization of organic compounds
Considerable knowledge in using various analytical techniques such as FTIR, GC-MS, NMR etc. in elucidating the solution chemistry of electrolyte
Knowledge in lithium batteries and experience in electrochemical cell characterization are plus.
Considerable experience in preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, presenting papers at scientific meetings, and constructing reports and presentations to meet the sponsor reporting requirements

Experience in organic synthesis
Hands-on experience with purification and characterization of organic compounds
Familiar with various analytical techniques such as FTIR, GC-MS, NMR
Understanding of statistical analysis and experimental design

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience
