The Power Systems and Markets Research Group brings together expertise across multiple academic disciplines and draws upon diverse industry experience to tackle some of the most complex challenges facing modern electricity systems, including:
Developing advanced power system models to simulate and optimize electricity system operations and planning in response to constantly evolving system conditions.
Quantifying the long-term cost-benefit tradeoffs of evolving wholesale electricity market designs.
Ensuring power system reliability, resilience, affordability, and equity of access throughout the ongoing transition to a fully decarbonized electricity system.
Modeling hydro systems to improve operational efficiency and grid value given uncertain future climate conditions.
Conducting comprehensive technoeconomic assessments of renewables and energy storage technologies.
Assist countries throughout the world with power system modeling to address grid reliability and renewables integration challenges.
Drawing upon world class computing resources to conduct in-depth data analysis that informs real-world decision making, and transferring knowledge to enhance energy planning in countries around the world, thereby improving energy access in traditionally underserved regions and supporting the global clean energy transition.
The candidate will develop power systems and electricity market modeling, and analytics tools that support energy, economic, and financial analyses of power grid planning and operations, and the interaction with other infrastructures. Some of these tools will require the development of underlying optimization methodologies and analytics frameworks. The incumbent will conduct research related to a wide range of topic areas including the analysis of energy and power systems, optimization of renewable energy integration, electricity market design and operation, integration of other emerging technologies, and interdependencies between power grid, transportation, and water systems. This position may require domestic and international travel.
Provides support to develop and implement power grid planning/operations algorithms and tools and conducts data analysis related to energy and power systems, with emphasis on the following areas: (1) renewable energy integration; (2) optimization and stochastic modeling methodologies; (3) energy storage, and (4) electricity market analysis.
Supports multidisciplinary teams in the application of these methods and tools to complex issues in the domains of environmental, water, and energy system analysis.
Prepares reports, papers, and presentations for conferences, workshops, and technical journals.
Supports program development including the preparation of proposals and participating in sponsor interactions.
Applies the models to selected case studies.
Document and publish to our internal software repository.
