What Your Job Will Be Like: Our team is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Appointee to pursue research in superconducting quantum systems with applications in quantum information science. A particular focus of our research is transduction of quantum information from superconducting qubits to other systems such as micro-mechanical (phononic) devices. The research will involve the characterization and operation of qubits and related structures. On any given day, you may be called upon to: + Characterize and operate quantum devices and qubits at dilution refrigerator temperatures. + Design hardware for delivering control signals to device under test + Design and implement experiments aimed at probing specific physical phenomena relevant to semiconductor quantum dots and qubits + Design and fabricate nanoscale quantum devices + Collaborate with a diverse team, including experimentalists and theorists, with experience in quantum information science + Communicate results via conferences, papers, and meetings with collaborators Qualifications We Require: + PhD in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or related field (PhD must to be conferred within 5 years prior to employment) + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Ability to quickly learn new experimental techniques + Experience making effective technical presentations + Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills + Experience working with quantum-based devices in an experimental setting + Experience with microwave measurement, network analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc. + Experience with cryogenic measurement techniques, including dilution refrigerator operation + Experience with data acquisition software + Experience with acoustoelectric devices + Ability to use/learn various simulation packages for qubit development, particularly RF simulation software such as Sonnet and HFSS. + Experience with low noise and RF measurement techniques + Knowledge of the basic procedures commonly used in nanoscale device fabrication + Scientific programming for efficient data collection + Ability to collaborate in a team environment and interested in interdisciplinary research + Independent vision, creativity, and ability to pursue and achieve R&D milestones About Our Team: The Quantum Phenomena Department (01879) is part of the Material, Physical, Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories which creates new scientific knowledge in support of Sandia's national security mission. We provide science-based solutions to meet the needs of various offices within the Department of Energy (especially the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, various Energy Technology Offices, and the National Nuclear Security Administration) as well as other government agencies. Our work spans the spectrum from fundamental research to groundbreaking applications. This department has a very broad range of research programs that include theory and experiment relating to quantum-based computation, communication, and fundamental science. Research topics in this department include quantum transport, quantum materials, quantum optics, as well as work on superconducting materials and devices and qubits.
