What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to operate as part of our dynamic team including multiple organizations. This position will require independent problem solving as well as cooperative teamwork and mentorship. This will include interacting with PIs and program managers, communicating results (both written and oral), publishing papers, attending conferences, and participating in program meetings. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop novel additive manufacturing (AM) processes and materials, with particular emphasis on direct-ink-write AM monitoring and control techniques. + Develop algorithms and software to support in situ characterization and analysis of printing process and material state of cure. + Perform materials characterization including thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, spectroscopic characterization, and rheological testing. + Utilize fluorimetry and photoNMR to characterize photochemical processes relevant to AM. + Use and adapt conventional instrumentation in unconventional manners, develop new apparatus and printing accessories, and develop data analysis and instrument feedback controls. + Perform basic lab and equipment maintenance. Expertise in all the above areas is not expected, but excitement about learning new techniques and the ability to master new skills quickly will be needed! Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related STEM field. PhD required to start. + Proficiency with MatLab, LabVIEW, Python, or related programing environments and experience automating data acquisition and instrumentation control + A strong track record of productivity demonstrated through peer reviewed publications, patents and presentations at technical conferences + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Strong work ethic and ability to ability to contribute as a member of a multi-disciplinary team + Ability to rapidly learn new skills and work in a fast-paced environment + Experience with additive manufacturing of polymers + Experience using Aerotech machine tools and controls + Experience with a broad range of materials characterization and mechanical testing techniques (DSC, TGA, rheology, DMA, IR, UV-Vis, etc.) + A dedication to producing high-quality results using good laboratory techniques and focused attention to detail + Excellent communication skills + Strong publication record About Our Team: The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities. Specifically, activities in our research groups include synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal-particle inks and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self-assembly of nanoparticles in 2- and 3-dimensions. Processing research and development includes providing a Direct Ink Write capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospinning of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, CO2 sequestration, and advanced medical treatments. Our customers include all of Sandia's mission areas and numerous external collaborators. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local high schools, community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States. Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
