The individual will work directly with a Technical Staff and others at Sandia/Albuquerque to support projects at the Thermal Spray Research Lab.On any given day, you may be called on to do: + Planning and performing hands-on experiments, as well as collecting and analyzing data with the goal of understanding how process parameters affect microstructure and properties for various thermal and kinetic spray processes (Aerosol Deposition, Plasma Spray, Cold Spray, Flame Spray) + Publish journal articles and present their work at local and national conferences + Interact and collaborate with other research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new research opportunities and projects Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramics, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related field + Experience in metallurgy and/or ceramics + Experience in designing and conducting experiments + History of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience in thermal spray, cold spray, or aerosol deposition + Experience with sensors for spray based coating technologies (laser velocimetry, dual-wavelength pyrometers, in-situ substrate bending etc.) + Excellent written and verbal communication skills + Experience/familiarity with microstructural and thermo-physical characterization methods About Our Team: The Thermal & Kinetic Spray Technologies Department (1834) provides scientific and engineering expertise in the area of Spray coatings. Six distinct processing methods in two thermal regimes are used to spray coatings that include Polymers, Ceramics, Base and Alloy Metals, Refractory Metals and Alloys, and complex material mixtures. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional (flame, plasma, twin-wire arc, HVOF) and advanced technologies: cold spray, low pressure plasma spray and aerosol deposition. Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
