What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral appointee to perform leading-edge research on fusing machine learning and Bayesian methods to calibrate and quantify the region of applicability of physics-based and data-driven models in the presence of uncertainty. This role will include both algorithm and computational framework development. The potential application problems are wide-ranging and include: + Ablation modeling for hypersonics + Thermal analysis for nuclear deterrence + Subsurface contaminant transport + Disease modeling + Turbulence modeling + Solid mechanics constitutive modeling On any given day you will be called on to + Conduct fundamental research, analysis, and demonstrations of new capabilities + Participate in an engaging research environment collaborating with world-renowned experts in a variety of technical fields + Publish in highly reputable journals and conference venues + Learn about the missions of the laboratory and strive towards impacting these missions with novel research Hybrid Work: The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary. Qualifications We Require: + PhD in computational science, engineering, applied mathematics or related STEM field + Experience with high-level coding languages such as, Matlab or Python + History of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience with Linux-based computing environments, version control, and Python + Expertise in uncertainty quantification + Expertise in data-driven closure/constitutive models + Strong teaming and collaboration skills About Our Team: The Optimization & Uncertainty Quantification Department at Sandia provides leadership in the research, development, and application of scientific optimization and UQ algorithms and software (design optimization, parameter estimation, uncertainty quantification, and sensitivity analyses). Security Clearance:

Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
