You could be the Postdoctoral Appointee that we are looking for to work in the area of in situ Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)! This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly productive and collaborative network of scientists. You will explore the role of extreme environments on microstructure and mechanical properties. These environments may include high/low temperatures, chemical environments, ion irradiation, and fatigue loading. You will join an outstanding team of 6-8 researchers focusing on the basic science of deformation, fracture, fatigue, and related deformation mechanisms. You will also work with a combined experiment-modeling team developing new machine-learning-assisted electron microscopy techniques for measuring nanoscale 3D strain, with cross-cutting applications in energy, advanced manufacturing, and quantum computing fields. In these pursuits you will be leveraging a state-of-the-art aberration-corrected monochromated environmental TEM equipped with a suite of advanced in situ sample holders, with access to many more cutting-edge tools and facilities at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). There are also opportunities open to new research pathways as well as engage with complementary research efforts and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the laboratory. Qualifications We Require: + PhD in a physical science discipline (e.g., Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field) + Experience with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for materials characterization + A record of scientific success as demonstrated by conference presentations and peer reviewed journal publications Qualifications We Desire: We realize that no one will have all the background we desire, so any subset of these skills could make you a candidate for the project, especially if you want to grow in these areas through your own skill development and through collaborations: + Experience with in situ electron microscopy experiments (such as heating, gas, nanomechanical testing, etc.), 4D-STEM, or other advanced techniques + Experience in using electron microscopy for diffraction analysis and defect analysis + Experience with a range of TEM sample preparation techniques + Interest in developing new advanced microscopy techniques + Experience with programming for data analysis using Matlab, Python, or similar software + Familiarity with material behaviors and mechanical properties + Capacity for conception, design, control, and execution of experiments + Ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment, as well as to collaborate with other researchers in a diverse team About Our Team: Our team spans across several departments, offering a broad collaborative environment. This department supports the Center for Integrated Nanotechnology (CINT). CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center operating as a national user facility devoted to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials. Through its core facility in Albuquerque and gateway facility in Los Alamos, CINT provides users from academia, industry, and government labs open access to the tools and expertise needed to explore the continuum from scientific discovery to the integration of nanostructures into the micro- and macro world. CINT is an equal partnership between Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date. Position Information: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
