What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Test Operations Engineer to support operations in the Radiation-Solid Interactions Department which operates and maintains Sandia’s Ion Beam Laboratory (IBL). This role includes the implementation of operational, maintenance, and administrative procedures to support the safe operations of the IBL, as well as the operation and oversight of a collection of focused ion beam implantation and irradiation capabilities that are used by a wide range of internal and external users. The IBL team consists of a mix of post-doctoral appointees, permanent technical staff and technologists. We operate seven high energy (kV to MV) ion accelerators, multiple high energy (100-300 kV) electron beam systems, optical setups including class 3R lasers, high temperature (>1200C) annealing stages, low temperature (<40K) chambers and high voltage (>100 kV) testing capabilities covering a wide range of complex high hazard operations. In the safety operations role, you will have the opportunity to oversee the development of the safety paperwork needed to ensure the safe operations of the entire IBL including operating procedures, pressure safety data packages, work control authorizations, etc…. This typically includes the development of new safety paperwork to allow for novel experiments to be developed. Here you will work hand and hand with ES&H professionals, key staff, and technologists from the IBL. In operations role, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and user interaction for a collection of focused ion beam implantation and irradiation capabilities. Here you will work with multiple IBL staff and users. On any given day we will be called upon to Safety Role + Prepare work planning and control documentation, to include failure mode analyses and safety cases, for work being conducted at the IBL + Design, develop and/or direct the fabrication of experiment hardware or test components, systems, and equipment + Prepare test and diagnostic programs and designs test fixtures and equipment for the IBL + Interface with the customers to ensure customer expectations are met Operation Role + Perform implantation and irradiation studies with a large number of both internal and external collaborators and users through the CINT user program. This will include the analysis and interpretation of experimental obtained test data using a collection of focused ion beam systems including the A&D FIB100NI, Raith Velion and Zeiss Helium Ion Microscope + Interface with the customers to ensure customer expectations are met Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Qualifications We Require: + Master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or related discipline plus one or more years of relvant science and/or engineering experience, or a bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or related discipline plus five or more years of relevant science and/or engineering experience + Prior experience with writing and reviewing safety technical work documents including operating procedures, pressure safety documents, etc. + Prior experience operating and maintaining focused ion beam (FIB), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) or particle accelerators and ion sources + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Prior experience writing and reviewing Sandia safety paperwork including technical work documents including NEPAs, PHSs, operating procedures, radiological operating procedures, pressure safety documents, etc. for a complex laboratory environment with multiple hazards including radiation, pressure, laser, chemical, cryogenic, etc + Prior experience with the focused ion beam operation and maintenance including usage of the A&D FIB100NI, Raith Velion and Zeiss Helium Ion Microscope This includes the fabrication of liquid metal alloy ion sources for the mass filtered FIB systems + Prior experience supporting a wide range of collaborators and users + Prior experience working with both internal Sandia users and external users through the CINT User Program + Prior Experience working with general electronics (DVMs, oscilloscopes, etc…), high voltage electronics (10-100 kV) and vacuum systems (1e-5 to 1e-8 torr) + Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team + Good time management skills + Energetic, hard-working person who is excited about problem solving About Our Team: The Radiation-Solid Interactions Department consists of a mix of post-doctoral appointees, permanent technical staff and technologists running and maintaining the Ion Beam Laboratory (IBL). We have a vibrant team representing a wide range of backgrounds, skill sets and work styles. The IBL houses 7 major accelerators: a 6 MV Tandem, a 3 MV Pelletron, a 1 MV tandem, a 400 kV implanter, a 30 kV Helium Ion Microscope and both a 35kV and 100 kV mass velocity filtered focused ion beam systems with <10nm spot size on target. Other experimental facilities include micro beam lines on all the major accelerators and a TEM, equipped with gas, fluid, and nanomechanical stages, with in-situ ion irradiation available from both the Tandem and a Colutron source. While our major equipment is typically run by individual technologists, the team works together to develop new capabilities, perform maintenance, and produce great scientific results. The IBL engages in three major research thrusts: + Understanding the performance of materials in radiation environments. These projects impact the performance of microelectronics in space and other hostile environments, as well as cladding materials in nuclear reactor and storage environments. + Developing and applying novel ion beam techniques to precisely measure materials compositions. Applications in this area include mapping hydrogen isotopes in fusion wall material and measuring the composition of thin complex materials such as transition metal oxides. + Exploring the materials science of defects in solids. This broad area includes single ion implants for quantum applications, anomalous grain growth in nanograined materials, hydride formation under irradiation, and nanomechanical responses of materials. Within each research thrust, individual staff develop a deep expertise in relevant subject matter, and our technologists develop unique technical knowledge in instrumentation and data acquisition.
