Job Description
A Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position is available, under the mentorship of Dr. Hatim Hassan, to work within the Departments of Nephrology and Physiology & Biomedical Engineering on research projects focusing on the following: 1. Evaluation of the therapeutic effects of Oxalobacter formigenes (a probiotic gut bacterium)-derived small novel peptides (P8 and P9) as potential novel therapeutics agents for hyperoxalemia, hyperoxaluria, and related disorders (including kidney stones). 2. Identification of the critical amino acids, cell surface receptors, and signaling pathways by which P8 and P9 stimulate intestinal oxalate transport. 3. Exploration of the pathogenesis of obesity and IBD-associated hyperoxaluria, including the role of gut microbiome.
In addition to an R01 grant, Dr. Hassan’s research has obtained several other prestigious awards/grants (including an NIH fast-track STTR grant and an NSF Phases I & II STTR grants to achieve further pre-clinical milestones towards commercialization of these novel peptides). Substantial resources are in place for this work. Potential for independent work and publications exist.
