Bidder Eligibility: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. Application of this requirement will not supersede collective bargaining agreements. What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated Postdoctoral Appointee in the Water Power Technologies Department! You will work both independently and with a multidisciplinary team of engineers working on marine renewable energy, including measurement/instrumentation and numerical modeling. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. On any given day you may be called on to: + Conduct structural/load measurements using fiber optics and electrical sensors, such as fiber-Bragg grating sensors, distributed fiber optic sensors, accelerometers, strain gauges, etc. + Perform structural and load analysis on tidal and wave energy converters + Develop and run fluid-structure interaction (FSI) models + Develop and test innovative sensors + Work side-by-side with marine energy developers to find solutions for technical problems + Support several experimental testing activities in collaboration with structural mechanics-, materials-, large-scale prototype testing- laboratories within Sandia and university partners, as well as supporting research field work + Contribute to manuscripts for publication Qualifications We Require: + PhD in an engineering-related field or similar STEM discipline (e.g., mechanics, structural engineering, fluid dynamics, sensors) + Ability to travel occasionally domestically + Ability to obtain and maintain an "L" clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experience with experimental testing + Ability to access High Performance Computing (HPC) and site resources at Sandia National Laboratories + Programming experience + MATLAB, ANSYS suites proficienty + Experience with CAD software (e.g., Solidworks) + Mechanical load measurements + Excellent organizational skills About Our Team: Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) design and analysis and foundation scour. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation.
