Job Description
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking dynamic Postdoctoral Researchers with technical expertise in the area of life cycle analysis (LCA). The Systems Assessment Center at Argonne National Laboratory continues a 30-year history of leadership in the field of life cycle analysis. Postdoctoral Researchers will join project teams including experts in a variety of topics relevant to their work and will regularly collaborate with experts from Argonne, industry and at other national laboratories. The Systems Assessment Center develops and maintains the Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation (GREET®) model, which is widely used by government, industry, and academic stakeholders to provide objective and credible LCA results (see greet.es.anl.gov). Results from the Postdoctoral Researchers’ work may be incorporated in the annual GREET updates.
Postdoctoral Researchers collect and synthesize information to conduct LCA studies in the GREET modeling platform, manipulate large datasets to extract meaningful information, communicate results through well-designed presentations, publish findings in refereed journal articles and reports, and present results at conferences, workshops, and project meetings. This research supports the U.S. Department of Energy and other funding agencies to assess the energy and environmental impacts associated with fuels and energy, infrastructure, vehicles and vessels, and integrated systems in order to guide R&D efforts, identify key drivers and improvement opportunities, and create new approaches for LCA/sustainability analysis to address emerging issues.
The position is in the Systems Assessment Center in the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis Division. Postdoctoral Researchers work with other team members to analyze transportation and energy systems, develop new models and datasets, and provide rigorous and objective results. We are currently seeking applicants with life cycle analysis experience in one or more of the following areas: transportation energy systems (including on-road light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, marine vessels, and off-road machines), materials production with a focus on vehicle/vessel materials and lightweighting, lithium-ion battery production and recycling, and vehicle/vessel manufacturing.
Position Requirements
Experience in data-driven sustainability analysis.
Demonstrated ability to perform life cycle assessment and/or techno-economic analysis and to write related scientific reports.
Familiarity with a wide range of data sources relevant to environmental and sustainability analysis, and the ability to identify topics and data sources and engage experts to conduct research. Capability of identifying key features of complex systems/processes.
Well-developed problem-solving, systems thinking, quantitative, analytical, and critical thinking skills; intellectual curiosity. Ability to structure and formulate solutions to complex problems.
Highly self-motivated and detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and in close collaboration with team members. Energized by working as part of a high-functioning team and demonstrates a professional attitude.
Skilled written and verbal communicator in English, including the ability to present complex information so that it is understandable to a broad audience.
Expertise relevant to analysis of one or more of the following: light-duty vehicles, heavy-duty vehicles, off-road machines, marine vessels, material production processes, lightweighting materials, vehicle and component production processes, vehicle powertrain technologies, batteries, fuel cells, and battery electric vehicles.
Experience analyzing large data sets.
Qualified individuals should have a doctorate degree in engineering (chemical, civil, environmental, mechanical, or similar), environmental science, or other related fields with coursework and/or research experience in life cycle analysis of transportation technologies.
A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications:
Computer skills relevant for data manipulation and analysis, including experience with creating and using complex models in Excel. Experience with MS Access, Excel VBA scripting, Python, R, AspenPlus, ArcGIS (or related software), Java, and/or Matlab is preferred. Experience with GREET is preferred.
