Job Description
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is an environmental sciences research organization within the Nevada System of Higher Education. DRI seeks one Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in the general areas of Geomorphology and Geochronology to perform interdisciplinary geoscience research while maintaining and developing new capabilities in the cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN) sample preparation facility within the Soil Characterization and Quaternary Pedology Laboratory (https://www.dri.edu/labs/soils-lab). We seek candidates that can perform sample preparation of common nuclides (e.g., 10Be, 26Al, and 36Cl) from rocks and sediment samples, perform data reduction and interpretation for routine applications of surface exposure dating, erosion rate analysis, and/or burial dating, and participate in research proposal development. The CRN sample preparation facility at DRI currently operates as both a contract and a research facility and consists of a variety of capabilities and equipment, including: a rock processing facility with jaw crusher, Bico disc mill, ball mill, and sieves; a mineral separation facility with a Frantz magnetic mineral separator, a heavy liquids separation station, and chemical processing station; an analytical room outfitted with an ICP-OES; and separate, dedicated lab spaces with fume hoods for 36Cl and for 10Be and 26Al processing. Independent research areas may include a wide range of geoscience topics of the candidate’s specialty, including soil, tectonic, and Quaternary geomorphology, with the expectation that the candidate will focus on development of sample preparation methods and Laboratory/client interaction. The position is based at DRI's Northern Nevada Science Center in Reno, Nevada.
Required Qualifications
• U.S. citizenship per sponsor funding requirements
• Ph.D. in geoscience, or related fields (e.g., geochemistry, environmental science) from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience processing rock or sediment samples for cosmogenic nuclide sample preparation.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in collaborative, team-based research.
• Proven self-starter who can take direction, but does not require it.
