Job Description
We seek a postdoctoral scholar to lead an industrial partnership for the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (St. Paul Campus). The research focuses on developing
waterborne polymers with high levels of renewable biomass using renewable nanoparticles in heterogeneous polymerizations. The goal is to produce high-biomass latexes for coatings, sealants, plastics, films, and adhesives.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in synthetic polymer chemistry, polymer characterization techniques, and mechanical testing of materials. A background in emulsion polymerization and familiarity with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nanofibrils is highly preferred. Experience with NMR, SEC, DSC, DMA, and TEM is also desirable. The position is for one year and renewable annually, depending on funding and performance. The start date is flexible.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a related field. Essential qualifications include experience in synthesizing and characterizing polymers and strong written and verbal communication skills. Preferred
qualifications include expertise in polymer synthesis, experience with emulsions, and testing commercial products such as composites, plastics, adhesives, coatings, and foams. Familiarity with lactide and catalyzed ring-opening polymerizations and various characterization
techniques, including NMR, SEC, DSC, DMA, and tensile testing, is also desirable.
Primary responsibilities include synthesizing renewable monomers, polymers, and composites, characterizing raw materials and reaction products, and overseeing product performance testing. The postdoctoral scholar will manage and train undergraduate and graduate
students and foster the development of fellow group members. They will also communicate research findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at meetings, writing quarterly reports, and discussions with commercial partners.
