What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations in the field of materials science. Our ongoing projects focus on lithium-ion battery chemistry, photopolymerization, and UF6 isotope quantification for non-proliferation efforts. If you are passionate about understanding the chemistry of materials through physical chemistry methods, particularly NMR spectroscopy, we invite you to consider this opportunity. You will collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and engineers, utilize unique equipment, develop spectroscopy methods, and gain exposure to the Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory system as you prepare for your independent career.

You may be called on to:

• Develop and apply NMR methods to investigate materials in solid, liquid, and gas phases.
• Utilize magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy to characterize organic and/or inorganic materials.
• Collaborate with a hardware development team to create tools for in situ NMR studies.
• Analyze data and generate testable models.
• Coordinate and collaborate with team members to link spectroscopic investigations with other spectroscopic data and material performance characteristics.
• Contribute to the preparation, publication, and presentation of scientific findings.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

• Possess, or pursuing, a PhD in a chemistry, materials science, physics, or engineering-related field, plus a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) (PhD must be conferred within five years prior to employment)
• Experience in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance or in the development of magnetic resonance methods (NMR, EPR, MRI, etc.), as demonstrated by contributions to peer-reviewed publications
• Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

• Experience with magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy
• Proficiency in scripting/programming for data analysis
• Working knowledge of magnetic resonance theory
• Interest in chemical kinetics and mechanistic modeling.
• Familiarity with electrochemical batteries, photopolymerization, fluorinated polymers, and/or actinide chemistry
• Experience in developing NMR pulse sequence methods
• Experience troubleshooting and/or building NMR spectroscopy hardware
• Familiarity with additional materials characterization techniques (e.g., X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma, etc.)

About Our Team:

The Organic Materials Science Department 1853 researches and develops new and advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a wide range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Current areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, creating new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, creating reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30 - 40 year lifetimes.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
