Job Description
The Dynamics and Structure Group (DYS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to develop High-Pressure, High-Temperature X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (HPHT-XPCS) for probing non-Newtonian viscoelasticity under extreme conditions.
The successful candidate will lead:
Integration of high-temperature diamond-anvil-cell (DAC) environments with Small-angle X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy
Development of novel inline optics at the beamline that enables simultaneous x-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy for high-pressure calibration, as well as on-axis microscopy
The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team with chemists, geophysicists, and x-ray scientists, and will be expected to apply the new HPHT-XPCS technique to address knowledge gaps in high-pressure science and publish the results in scientific journals.
The initial appointment is for two years and may be extended to a third year, contingent on performance, project progress, and funding. This is an on-site role at Argonne National Laboratory (Lemont, IL), within the X-ray Science Division (XSD) and the APS scientific user-facility.
Position Requirements
PhD completed in the past 5 years or soon-to-be completed in Geoscience, Physics, Chemistry, Materials/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: high-pressure science, synchrotron X-ray techniques, rheology, Raman spectroscopy, and Python programming, among others.

Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

Full timeThe expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00-$117,925.00.Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
